  1. Bart van der Leck uses a technique he calls ‘doorbeelding’ (an untranslatable term approximating to ‘decomposition’) to create abstract works. He starts by making a realistic sketch of reality, such as a person or an animal. Subsequently, he continually makes new sketches in which he gradually reduces the image to geometric forms. As a result, the designs of Bart van der Leck usually retain recognisable representations. He uses geometric forms in primary colours, but still remains figurative.

See above, for example, the portrait of a man who drinks a glass of wine. Van der Leck will have started with a lifelike sketch of this wine drinker. Then he was able to draw out the contours and replace them with cubes. A large number of shapes were not replaced and the space was left white. The result is a composition in which a drinking man can still be recognised, but which still consists entirely of abstract forms.
